In 2024, the School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University (TSJC) made significant strides in expanding its global reach and reputation. Highlights included hosting international conferences both locally and abroad, launching prestigious international master’s programs, and forging partnerships with leading global organizations, media outlets, and world-top universities. Students benefited from immersive overseas field trips and participation in prestigious international seminars, while world-renowned experts from academia and industry were invited to deliver lectures and lead engaging workshops. These initiatives have positioned the school as a vibrant hub of international collaboration and innovation.
SPOTLIGHT ONE: EIGHT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES
In 2024, TSJC hosted eight international conferences in cities, including Milan, Italy; Washington DC, U.S.; Singapore; Harare, Zimbabwe; and Beijing, China. These conferences focused on pressing global issues such as science and technology, business journalism, environmental communication, health communication, global governance, and international communication. By addressing global challenges and fostering collaboration, TSJC continues to contribute to shared prosperity and the vision of a community with a shared future for humanity.

SPOTLIGHT TWO: LAUNCH OF INTERNATIONAL DEGREE PROGRAMS
In 2024, TSJC took a significant step in enhancing its international education by launching the Tsinghua-NTU Global Science Communication Dual Degree Master’s Program in partnership with the renowned Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. This innovative three-year program, open to international students, offers a unique opportunity to study for two years at Tsinghua University and one year at NTU.

SPOTLIGHT THREE: PARTNERSHIP WITH SINGAPORE MEDIA OUTLETS
In May, the TSJC delegation visited the SPH Media Group in Singapore to explore and formalize initiatives for internships in academic and professional exchange, as well as programs for visiting scholars. TSJC and SPH Media Group also forged a collaborative partnership with the National University of Singapore, with plans to jointly offer both compulsory and elective courses in communication and journalism.

SPOTLIGHT FOUR: ACADEMIC COOPERATION WITH U.S. UNIVERSITIES
In November, TSJC renewed its five-year cooperation agreement with the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the Viterbi School of Engineering. The three partners celebrated the significant success of the Tsinghua University-USC Data Communication Dual Master’s Degree Program, which has been instrumental in cultivating international, interdisciplinary data communication talent over the past five years. Additionally, TSJC entered into a partnership with the School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley, to establish a summer program fostering mutual visits for faculty and students.

SPOTLIGHT FIVE: PARTNERSHIPS WITH UNITAR
In 2024, TSJC signed an MOU with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). This collaboration focuses on a wide range of initiatives, including training programs, short-term workshops, student internships, and employment opportunities. Building on this successful partnership, the School is also working closely with UNITAR to launch a highly anticipated international PhD program in Global Development and Communication, taught entirely in English. This collaboration further reinforces TSJC’s commitment to fostering global perspectives and equipping students with the skills needed to address the world’s most pressing challenges.

SPOTLIGHT SIX: COLLABORATION WITH THE UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM
In September, TSJC had the honor of co-hosting a side event with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in New York, held alongside the United Nations Summit of the Future. This landmark event brought together leading experts and figures from government, business, media, and academia. Additionally, the TSJC delegation visited the United Nations Department of Global Communications and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations to explore potential collaborations. These initiatives reflect TSJC's commitment to driving meaningful engagement on critical global issues.

SPOTLIGHT SEVEN: PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE ICRC
In November, TSJC co-hosted a high-level media dialogue with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities of crisis reporting and the media’s role and responsibilities. Earlier in March, the School signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the ICRC, marking the start of a robust, multi-dimensional partnership. This collaboration will focus on key areas such as humanitarian geography, the role of media in crisis reporting, and global health and development, further strengthening our shared commitment to addressing global challenges.

SPOTLIGHT EIGHT: IMMERSIVE OVERSEAS FIELD TRIPS
In 2024, faculty and students at TSJC participated in field practices and immersive training across Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and other regions. By engaging with diverse global perspectives, students gained a deeper understanding of the world’s interconnectedness and the shared future of humanity while enhancing their cross-cultural communication skills and global competence.

SPOTLIGHT NINE: HOSTED 80 VISITING INTERNATIONAL EXPERTS
In 2024, TSJC hosted 80 distinguished international experts, including renowned professors, scholars, and media leaders from across the globe. These experts hailed from countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Chile, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and many others. They enriched our academic community by delivering 16-week courses, engaging in short-term workshops, and offering insightful lectures that spanned a wide range of subjects. This dynamic exchange of knowledge not only enhanced the learning experience for our students but also fostered greater global perspectives within the School.

SPOTLIGHT TEN: 238 FACULTY AND STUDENTS ON ACADEMIC VISITS OVERSEAS
In 2024, a total of 238 faculty members and students from TSJC had the invaluable opportunity to undertake academic visits abroad, participating in the most prestigious international conferences in journalism and communication, which included renowned events such as IAMCR, ICA, AEJMC, and NCA. At these distinguished conferences, our faculty and students not only gained exposure to cutting-edge developments in their respective fields but were also invited to report on and present their latest research findings to a global audience. By participating in these influential events, our faculty and students further cemented the School’s international reputation for academic excellence and innovation.

Looking ahead to 2025, TSJC remains committed to further enhancing its global presence and academic excellence.
